The Ernest Mario Rotunda, one of the highlights of the APhA Headquarters, is a central domed space with a deep semicircular recess for the statue of William Proctor Jr., the Father of American Pharmacy. John Russell Pope designed this domical space with skylights and ornate pendentives that are similar to his later Tate Gallery rotunda in London. The Rotunda will have new lighting, and its acoustics will be improved. In addition, all dressed stone will be cleaned and repointed where required. New doors and transoms will also be added. One of the most significant changes to this grand space will be the commission to create four original sculptures in front of the Rotunda’s four stone corner piers as a complement to the statue of Proctor. Each statue will be an interpretation of the profession’s code of ethics, and new lighting will enhance these dramatic and unique additions.
